WhatsApp Chat Button Best Practices: Popup and Placement

Where to put a WhatsApp chat button, how to word the welcome popup and first message, and how to tell whether it brings you customers.

A button is easy. A good one takes a few decisions.

Adding a WhatsApp chat button to your website takes minutes. Getting people to click it, and to buy afterwards, depends on a handful of small choices. This guide covers the ones that matter most.

Placement

Bottom right is where most visitors expect a chat button, so start there. Move it to the left only if something else already sits in the right corner, such as a cookie banner or a back-to-top arrow.

Check your busiest pages on a phone. A button that covers a price, a form field or a buy button costs more than it earns. Use a small distance from the edge, and move it clear of anything important.

Icon only, or icon with words?

An icon alone is neat and works when visitors are used to chat buttons. Words such as "Chat with us" or "Need help?" make the purpose obvious and often get more clicks on pages where visitors are hesitant. If your site is busy, or most visitors use small screens, try the icon alone first.

The welcome popup

A popup should make starting a chat feel easy. Three rules help:

  1. Ask something the visitor can answer. "Need help choosing something? Ask us here" works better than "Welcome to our website."
  2. Offer one clear next step. The button should say what happens: "Start chat" or "Get a quote".
  3. Do not open it too fast. Five to ten seconds is a sensible start. Open it later on pages that take time to read.

Use a real name or team name, and do not promise speed you cannot keep. If you reply within a day, do not write "replies in minutes".

The first message

The text waiting in the chat box should read like something a customer would write. Keep it short and specific: "Hi! I have a question about your delivery times."

Give different pages different messages. A pricing page can say "Hi! I have a question about pricing" and a product page "Hi! I have a question about this product". When the chat arrives, you can see where it came from without any extra tools.

Measuring results

  • Count the chats you get each week before and after adding the button.
  • Read the first messages to see which pages bring chats.
  • Track clicks by creating a Google Tag Manager trigger for links that contain wa.me.

Change one thing at a time and give each change a few weeks. That way you learn which change made the difference.
